Me and my sister both are into knitting so we took pictures of some items & we were astounded by the price... $59(Canadian) for 217 yards (proof: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jadzeea-knits/4374408023/ )

As for how much a single item costs: $595 for a shawl ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/jadzeea-knits/4374408793/ ) or $760 yet another shawl ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/jadzeea-knits/4374410921/ )Charmainehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02762964881084576918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5174513830629991932.post-77599214322917286282010-04-04T10:30:10.505-07:002010-04-04T10:30:10.505-07:00Thank you very much for taking the time to read my...Thank you very much for taking the time to read my blog. Just a quick correction though, Vicuna is generally considered to be llama wool and it is not commercially collected or processed, so it is not included in the global price tallies. Qiviut is commercially produced.shoulderachehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10382572277825756628noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5174513830629991932.post-85624361957658206832010-04-03T12:25:47.711-07:002010-04-03T12:25:47.711-07:00Great post - I love that you're giving publici...Great post - I love that you're giving publicity to such amazing animals and a good cause! :-)

Couple small corrections/explanations, though. Qiviut is actually not the most expensive fiber, yard-for-yard. That would be vicuna:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicu%C3%B1a

To make that into an "apples to apples" comparison, here's the price for 217 yards of vicuna yarn:
http://www.dreamweaveryarns.com/catalog/jacques-cartier-pure-vicuna-yarn-p-2618.html

vs 217 yards of qiviut yarn:
http://www.dreamweaveryarns.com/catalog/qiviuk-yarn-qiviut-p-2043.html

You can see that the vicuna is almost 4x as expensive as the qiviut - makes it seem like a bargain in comparison! :-D

Also, to commenter "M" above - it would depend entirely on the size of the item; how many yards of yarn were required for the knitted or woven object. With one ball of the yarn above you could knit a small, lacy scarf. Plus the cost of labor, $150-$200 would probably be the minimum price (assuming a fair price was paid for labor, and "fair" is of course highly subjective). A larger garment - say, a sweater - could easily cost upwards of $1500 or more.

For what it's worth, I have been privileged to feel qiviut in person once, but I've never been lucky enough to own or knit with it ;-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5174513830629991932.post-14802214154027781022010-04-03T11:59:40.952-07:002010-04-03T11:59:40.952-07:00Thanks for stopping by and reading! Thanks for stopping by and reading!shoulderachehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10382572277825756628noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5174513830629991932.post-62113555809583873992010-04-03T07:55:38.859-07:002010-04-03T07:55:38.859-07:00wow I had no idea thanks for this post!wow I had no idea thanks for this post!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5174513830629991932.post-86019740007993548142010-04-01T14:43:54.392-07:002010-04-01T14:43:54.392-07:00Learned something new tnx to your post…just wonder...Learned something new tnx to your post…just wondering how expensive is an item from this wool?Mhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07484603953179244458noreply@blogger.com
